Los Angeles native William Alexander recently debuted his first body of original compositions, Love Is Abound. Taking cues from early Impressions demos, MPB, and the late DIY scenes of East L.A., William chronicles the evolution of post-love musings into rustic stone soul for the brokenhearted. Between touring with the space jazz of Josef Leimberg, and the soul pop of Aloe Blacc, a love of song and form began its blossom from the roots of William’s deep affinity for rhythm. By means of an $80 mic, a trial version of logic pro, and a 4-track tape recorder, these early songs found life based within a sincerity of the moment, rather than technical prowess – a quick, at times messy, albeit honest depiction of the journey through love, loss, and naivety. The result is a ‘straight out the dirt’ raw offering of soulful lo-fi grit.
What is the song you’re listening to most these days?
“Nobody” by Mac Demarco.
Why does this song speak to you? What feelings do you get from it?
It reminds me of the finite nature of things, and the beauty within that. There’s a feeling of reflective longing for something that can never return. It’s kind of sad but comforting.
What about the artist interests you? What about the song’s production stands out to you/hooks you?
Impeccable writing, unique vision, a genuine artist. The simplicity and sparseness really bring out the song. Very raw, thoughtful, and soulful.
What are you working on that you’d like us to plug?
